Spanish wine has always been a little underappreciated here, as has Spanish food. Yet, both have been slowly gaining in popularity. The fiery cuisine and robust wines are quite a good match for our tropical heat and spicy palates.

Alicia Merino de Diego from Bodegas Mauro & San Román will be hosting a wine dinner this May, and you can enjoy some of the finest of both food and drink.
The wineries share were both founded by former chief winemaker at Vega Sicilia and Spanish winemaking icon Mariano Garcia.
Bodegas Mauro was founded in 1980, and gave Mariano the freedom to experiment with wines that would remain true to Tempranillo and its terroir, while adding a personal statement. Other than old Tempranillo grapes, the vineyards often use Garnacha and Syrah in their blends
San Román 1997 was the first modern Toro wine, vinified at the old Mauro winery. Two wines are made here: San Román, aged for 22-23 months in new French and used American oak barrels, and Prima, a young, crianza-style wine aged for 11-12 months in 2-3-year-old French and American oak barrels. In blind tastings, the impressive San Román has repeatedly placed ahead of all other wines from DO Toro.
New releases from the wineries will be the focus of the dinner. The featured wines are (note: tasting notes from winery):
- Prima 2014
The wine was aged in French and American oak for 14 month. The nose displays smoky black fruit and a touch of black olive. The wine has a well-balanced palate, full of fruit and gentle in tannins, with hints of blackberry and spices on the finish. - San Roman 2013
Full bodied, opulent, and floral, with a wide range of aromas and nuances. Very complete, rich and elegant, with silky tannins and juicy fruitiness. It’s an earthy wine with plenty of dark aromas of peat, fountain pen ink, graphite and tar, with very ripe fruit, black and blue berries. San Roman spends 24 months in French & American oak barrels of different ages. - Mauro 2014
Intense and powerful expression of fruit. Dense but accessible with ripe and polished tannins. Elegant and voluptuous on the palate, showing great roundness and a smooth character. - Mauro VS 2013
The 2010 VS is a special selection of Tempranillo from two plots of older vineyards. Spicy and mineral, subtle and elegant, this 2010 has a harmony of tannins, concentration and acidity.
The wines will be paired with four courses by Executive Chef Pepe Moncayo that showcase seasonal produce.
Highlights include Duck Dumplings in a foie gras broth, with water chestnut, enoki and red meat radish; and a plump Toretama Egg that sits atop a bed of acquerello rice, chorizo, rabelais tomatoes and hanaho.
