While soda and sparkling water hasn’t received much attention in the cocktail world, it’s all the harder to ignore when the topic does occasionally pop up. And Perrier has just popped up.

While sparkling water is normally firmly in the realm of posh restaurants, it does have its uses behind the bar. The more commonplace soda – a simple carbonated can of (usually) distilled water- has one main virtue- its fizziness.

Topping up a cocktail with Perrier

Sparkling water, on the other hand, does add something a little more subtle to a drink- though one has to handle it with care. It has a thicker, rounder viscousity, giving it a more satisfying texture, and a light minerality that adds a subtle flavour dimension to drinks.

While we can’t speak for all sparkling water, we also felt that in the case of Perrier, the gas bubbles were finer. Some say that it’s because the bubbles are not created as a result of rapid artificial injection, but a slow natural process, giving the carbon dioxide time to dissolve fully.

A tall drink, possibly the best way to enjoy any sparkling water

Whether that explanation is true or not, the drink does indeed have a delicate- and- perception is everything- elegant texture.

If that sounds like something that you might like in your cocktails, then you’ll probably be glad to hear that you can test that theory firsthand. As part of a showcase of their new limited edition bottles Perrier has teamed up with bars in Singapore, resulting in the birth of 10 drinks- some alcoholic and some…not so much.

As a bonus, you’ll get to keep the limited edition bottle- featuring a design by artist Juan Travieso, and whatever’s left in it. Stock of the bottle are limited, of course.

Not too shabby a deal, in our opinion, considering the drinks themselves are not expensive at all!
