You can’t deny that music and drinking go together, like milk and cereal, hipsters and big spectacles, soft-boiled eggs and light soy sauce… you get the idea. But some drinks go better with certain songs and vice versa. Here are some suggestions for an anthem for your drink.
Any brightly coloured cocktail or blended drink: I’m dancing on my own, I make the moves up as I go
Shake it Off – Taylor Swift
Flaky, but not necessarily self-depreciating, the cocktail is for those who dislike the taste of alcohol and yet want to let loose and have some fun. Of course, the serious drinkers may be offended by this but the haters gonna hate hate hate hate hate…
Gin and tonic: Nighthawks seem to sense that now is the time.
King and Cross – Ásgeir
Slightly reserved and very respectable, the gin and tonic is poetry on your lips. The G and T’s simple elegance can be traced back to its sophisticated history that makes it stand out from other mixed drinks as the venerable drink of choice.
Beer: I think you know you’re my best friend
So Now What – The Shins
Whether you’re having it as an appetizer for a crazy night out, a quick after-work drink on a weekday, or choice of beverage as you gamble your Angpao money away over Chinese New Year, this is the one drink you know you can always come back to no matter how old you are.
Champagne: A moment, a love, a dream, a laugh, a kiss, a cry, our rights, our wrongs
Sweet Disposition – Temper Trap
The bubbly makes an appearance now and then but when it does, it hardly disappoints. In between the new year’s fireworks and nights out at Zouk when a drunk stranger offers champagne in abundance, we all have a champagne moment to remember.
Whisky: From the labyrinth beyond time and space, seeks his way out to a clearing
Encore – Nicolas Jaar
Every whisky connoisseur makes it their sole purpose to achieve perfection in a glass that is worthy of both their time and attention. This minimalist track’s only words are a segmented quote from artist Marcel Duchamp 1957 speech, “The Creative Act”, but the genius of Nicolas Jaar’s self-defined stylistics is mesmorising, even mediumistic, just like the artistry of whisky drinking.
